HANA, S4 HANA, and HANA Cloud Platform. Sometimes I feel SAP is playing a game with HANA as the base word. Just to be clear, I am talking about S4 HANA, the new SAP business suite. It runs on SAP HANA, the new in-memory database.
Existing SAP ERP customers are at crossroads. SAP Business Suite on non-HANA database enters maintenance mode in 2019 and SAP ECC enters maintenance mode in 2025. At the same time, the post-modern SAP HANA is providing numerous opportunities for enterprises to change how business is being done.
Most of the current SAP ECC customers have not decided their S4 HANA strategy. With fast changing business models and digital transformation being a business reality essential, it is nice to have SAP ECC customers looking into S4 HANA as the logical upgrade path. But, not all SAP ECC customers are at this stage.
S4 HANA is the 4th ERP suite developed by SAP. While the evolution of ERP dates back to 1979 when SAP R/2 was released, the current solution which was first launched in 2015 is a truly modern 21st century ERP. It enables organizations to work seamlessly in a digital economy.
Successful S4 HANA implementation occurs only if the end user’s IT team is ready to deal with the project and the resulting change management. Based on our experience with our S/4HANA customers, the following are some of the key project considerations which customers should look at before starting their S4 HANA implementation.
SAP S4 HANA is positioned as the new digital core and a direct evolution from SAP ECC for existing ECC customers. SAP is now offering attractive discounts to nudge this adoption forward. But, it is not a direct replacement for SAP ERP with respect to the functionalities and capabilities.
